Eric Wampler, reported to lead LMPD’s Professional Standards/internal affairs function, allegedly instructed LMPD personnel not to respond directly to questions or requests from Louisville’s Office of Inspector General and instead to route those requests through LMPD. Public reporting identifies this as part of an active conflict over the OIG’s authority to investigate LMPD misconduct complaints. The OIG is an independent oversight office, and Louisville Metro Code § 36.82 requires Metro officers and employees to cooperate with the OIG and provide access to employees, documents, records, and other necessary information.
This conduct, if substantiated, constitutes intentional interference with a lawful oversight investigation and should be classified, at minimum, as obstruction of justice, obstruction of an official investigation, failure to cooperate with oversight authorities, abuse of command authority, and conduct reflecting adversely on candor, integrity, and credibility. A command-level directive discouraging or preventing cooperation with an independent investigative body creates Brady/Giglio impeachment concerns because it impedes access to witnesses, records, and misconduct evidence relevant to officer credibility.
